Since Zombies, Run!, launched earlier this spring, it’s been a runaway (ahem) success. This week, the fitness app, co-developed by a small London-based games studio and an award-winning British novelist, launches on Android and adds a new site which allows its users to track their runs. It’s the latest chapter of an unlikely success story with lessons for the games developers and creative agencies, alike.
For a start there’s the app itself--which has more in common with an audiobook or radio play than it does with other fitness apps or smartphone games.
Billed as "an ultra-immersive running game," Zombies, Run! casts the user as a struggling survivor of a zombie apocalypse. "Players," encouraged to undertake missions to gather supplies for people they want to save as the drama plays out in fully scripted audio they hear as they run, are rewarded with further segments of the unfolding story.
Then there’s the development story--the app was a self-publishing project by London-based Six to Start with a budget raised through Kickstarter. At an eye-watering £5.49 / $7.99 for the full version, Zombies, Run! costs considerably more than pretty much any other game app. Yet despite all this, sales have exceeded 100,000 in just under three months with around 750,000 miles run in aggregate by runners using the game--not bad going for a leftfield idea with no budget for marketing.

All of the meals are chosen based their nutritional makeup--carbohydrates, protein, calories, and fat--and what your body specifically needs. If you don’t trust Nutrivise, detailed nutritional information is available for each food item. All the recipes (sourced from Yummly) can be prepared in under 30 minutes.
The beta version is just the beginning for Nutrivise, which recently raised $750,000 in funding. There are already over 1 million food items in the database, but the startup is working with Stanford nutritionists and professors to reverse engineer the calories in various restaurant dishes--eventually, the app will be able to recommend foods at the local spot on the corner that would never bother to release its nutritional data. It wouldn’t be hard for Nutrivise to quickly expand their restaurant listings; they would just need the menus.

Square Registers 2 Million Users
The U.S. is not breaking out in hives--the chart above just shows Square's 2 million users going about their usual business during a single hour on a Thursday afternoon.
The payment upstart picked up 1 million users their first year on the block delivering a credit card reader that fit with a smartphone dock to small business and consumers in the US. Square announced today that the company has doubled that number to 2 million users across the U.S. Square now processes a yearly $6 billion in payments and, eyeing an international expansion, just hired itself a new new CFO, Sarah Friar.
Microsoft May Buy Enterprise Social Network Yammer
Microsoft may be buying enterprise social network Yammer, adding a virtual water cooler to the list of office software the Redmond firm already sells. Neither company has confirmed the deal, though sources have told Bloomberg we may see news of the sale (and a price tag of a little over $1 billion) announced this week. Rumors of the acquisition began, as many good stories do, after a conversation was overheard in a Bay Area coffee shop and tweeted to the rest of the world.
Facebook To Open Real-Time Bidding For Targeted Ads
Facebook will start letting advertisers bid on ad placements in real time, Bloomberg reports, tapping into a new source of revenue for the social network. Real-time ad bidding, where advertisers place ads based on a viewer's browser history, is a technique that advertisers are familiar with. Google has been using the method for some years now, but this is Facebook's first pop at it. The new "Facebook Exchange" will roll out in the next few weeks with eight firms on board at the start. Advertisers will be able to target Facebookers using a combination of their own user data and data from third parties. Since going public, Facebook has been under pressure to demonstrate new ways to make money. Taking a page out of Google's book, this is one step in that direction.
Nokia Slashing 10,000 Jobs, Juggling Executives
Embattled mobile phone maker Nokia has revealed some radical restructuring as it tries to secure its future. The firm is ditching up to 10,000 staff by the end of next year as it closes facilities in Germany, Canada, and its homeland of Finland in a move to reduce its annual cost of running its Devices & Services division to only €3 billion compared to the 2010 figure of €5.3 billion. Three new senior executives have been appointed in its Operations, Mobile Phones, and Marketing divisions, along with two other new appointments and three existing senior executives have been moved out of the leadership team. Nokia is also committed to doubling down on its smartphone efforts, and will broaden the price range of its new Lumia range of Windows devices. It's also sold its premium phone business Vertu to EQT VI, a private equity group, for €1 billion. Nokia has recently been in the headlines for burning through cash as it loses money on weak sales.

Below is the press release
General Moly, Inc. (the "Company") (nyse mkt and tsx:GMO) today, announced that a Nevada State District Court ("the Court") issued its Order affirming the Nevada State Engineer's ("the NSE") Ruling of July 2011 approving the Mt. Hope Project's water rights and the NSE's December 2011 and January 2012 issuance of water permits for the Mt. Hope Project.
The 59 page Order, which has been posted to the Press Release section of the Company's website, describes the Petitioners' arguments before the Court and denies all Petitioners' respective petitions for Judicial Review.
Bruce D. Hansen, Chief Executive Officer of General Moly, said, "I am extremely pleased that the State Engineer's thorough and inclusive process in approving the Mt. Hope Project's water rights and permits has been affirmed by the Court. Obtaining water rights for the Mt. Hope Project has been a long process and I am eager to move beyond the protests and appeals of the past three years toward a more positive and engaged dialogue with the County of Eureka and its citizens. The 3M Plan, approved by the NSE earlier this week, provides mitigation protections to other water users if impacts are caused by the Mt. Hope project. With full access to our water rights and permits we look forward to the receipt of our remaining State and Federal permits and initiating construction activities later this year. The Mt. Hope project is moving forward."
General Moly is a U.S.-based molybdenum mineral development, exploration and mining company listed on the NYSE MKT (formerly the NYSE AMEX) and the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol GMO. Our primary asset, our interest in the Mt. Hope project located in central Nevada, is considered one of the world's largest and highest grade molybdenum deposits. Combined with our second molybdenum property, the Liberty project that is also located in central Nevada, our goal is to become the largest primary molybdenum producer by the middle of the decade. Allen Stanford was sentenced to 110 years in prison for directing a massive Ponzi scheme.
Allen Stanford, the former Texas billionaire convicted of a $7 billion Ponzi scheme, was sentenced to 110 years in prison by a U.S. federal judge on Thursday.
Stanford, who was found guilty of 13 felony counts of fraud and conspiracy by a Houston jury in March, used fraudulent certificates of deposit issued by his offshore bank in Antigua to bilk thousands of investors out of their savings.
Stanford claimed he had the funds to pay his depositors, and that his financial empire was solvent until the Securities and Exchange Commission shut it down in 2009.
Prosecutors argued successfully at trial that Stanford skimmed much of the investors' money to fund his lavish lifestyle.
The government had recommended U.S. District Judge David Hittner sentence Stanford to the maximum 230 years in prison, among the longest white collar sentences in history.
Prosecutors also asked Hittner to order Stanford to forfeit $5.9 billion, which may be largely symbolic since most of the money is gone.
The 62-year-old Stanford plans to appeal.

Microsoft Corp |
After its recently launched social network so.cl, Microsoft corp may be interested in the associated technology sites to refine the social networking experience along with reinventing its search engine Bing through social networking. Company is in talk with Yammer Inc, operator of a social network for businesses, said two people familiar with the matter.
Microsoft may pay more than $1 billion, and a deal may be reached as soon as tomorrow, said one person, who declined to be identified because the negotiations are private.
Gaining closely-held Yammer would help Microsoft, the world’s largest software maker, add social-networking tools to the suite of products it offers corporate customers. Large information-technology companies are snapping up nimbler startups, sometimes before they reach an initial public offering, spending $17.4 billion on enterprise software acquisitions in 2011, compared with $715.5 million in 2009, data compiled by Bloomberg show.
A deal for Yammer would follow other recent enterprise software purchases centered around social media.Salesforce.com Inc. (CRM) gained social-marketing tools through its $745 million purchase of Buddy Media Inc. earlier this month, and Oracle Corp. (ORCL) recently bought two companies that analyze data on social- media sites -- Vitrue Inc. and Collective Intellect Inc.
Frank Shaw, a spokesman for Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft, declined to comment on a potential deal. Deanna McPherson, a spokeswoman for closely held Yammer, also declined to comment.
Venture Funding
San Francisco-based Yammer was founded in 2008 by David Sacks, the former chief operating officer at PayPal Inc. It has raised more than $140 million in funding from venture firms, including Charles River Ventures Inc. and Emergence Capital Partners.
Yammer is used by more than 200,000 companies, including Ford Motor Co. and EBay Inc. (EBAY) It provides features for internal corporate use that are similar to those found on Facebook Inc.’s website. Yammer competes with Jive Software Inc. (JIVE), Chatter, run by Salesforce.com., and Asana Inc., Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz’s company.
Jive, which had its initial public offering in December, gained 8.8 percent to $18.20 at 10:44 a.m. in New York. The stock had gained 4.6 percent this year through yesterday.
US ignite |
The series of tubes that make up the Internet are getting bigger. Tomorrow President Obama will sign an executive order at the White House speeding the way for laying new cable, for example, by letting companies install broadband during highway construction work, which can lower the cost of installation up to 90%. At the same time, new applications of distributed cloud computing, virtualized networks that use software to simplify the flow of information, and symmetrical gigabit bandwidth connections all the way to your laptop, taken together, have the potential to reach speeds up to 250 times faster than today's Internet.
But what will we do with all that Internet? White House CTO Todd Park announced today that the National Science Foundation, which built the $40 million Global Environment for Network Innovations, "GENI," a prototype ultrafast broadband sandbox for developers, is sponsoring the US Ignite competition in partnership with Mozilla, Juniper, Cisco, Verizon, Comcast, and several other companies.
What is US ignite?
US Ignite is an initiative to promote US leadership in developing applications and services for ultra-fast broadband and software-defined networks. It will foster the creation of novel applications and digital experiences that will transform healthcare, education and job skills training, public safety, energy, and advanced manufacturing. By serving as a coordinator and incubator of this ecosystem, US Ignite will accelerate the adoption of next-generation networks.
US Ignite’s mission is threefold:
Spur the development of next-generation applications and digital experiences specifically designed for advanced-technology networks
Maximize the potential of the GENI project’s national testbed network, a platform initially connecting 14 campuses and 6 cities providing symmetrical speeds of at least 100 Mbps
Establish the US Ignite Partnership, a non-profit, public-private organization, to ensure new applications offer high-impact public benefit and/or high potential for commercialization
Leveraging existing high-speed networks connecting research institutions and enterprises.
Sharing best practices in infrastructure deployment, service creation and delivery, application development, and R&D.
With support from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, the National Science Foundation, and the GENI Program Office, the US Ignite Initiative will leverage the combined resources of government, research institutions, foundations, and industry to foster an innovation ecosystem for gigabit application and service development.
Six cities have shown initial interest in piloting US Ignite efforts, including Chattanooga, Cleveland, Lafayette, LA, Philadelphia, Washington DC, and cities throughout the Salt Lake City region. Additional cities can be GENI-enabled rapidly.
Two models, hosting a late-night weather forecast programme on a Chinese television show, have been forced to cover themselves up after they drew sharp reactions from viewers for being bikini-clad.
The Guangdong TV was trying to promote its bikini contest to be held after the ongoing Euro 2012 football championship, 'Shanghai Daily' reported.
On Saturday, when two young women contestants of the bikini competition, to be organised by Guangdong TV, came in their skimpy swimsuits to present the weather forecast, it invited immediate online reactions.
Some viewers in Guangdong province, who had tuned in to watch the Euro 2012 soccer tournament but instead came across the girls telling about weather conditions at the stadiums, said they were "dressed too sexy".
The Europa Weather Forecast, a minute-long programme, is being screened at 11.15 pm everyday since last Saturday.
"What a low-taste show," said one of the microbloggers. "There's nothing wrong with wearing bikinis, but not in a TV programme available to everyone, including children."
Some viewers, however, welcomed the programme, praising it as "innovative".
"Of course I strongly support the TV station for presenting such an unprecedented programme to entertain us," a viewer commented on Weibo. "It would be better if they chose some better looking girls."
